General Surgery at Hilton Vet Hospital

Pet Surgical Procedures

At Hilton Vet Hospital, we perform surgeries to a high standard of safety, sterility and professionalism. Our safe anaesthesia is administered by experienced vets who know the importance of keeping your pet comfortable through the whole procedure.

We have a dedicated sterile surgery area where we can scrub up, and perform sterile surgery without the concern of contamination and infection. Our qualified and experienced staff are well trained to do advanced monitoring of your pet’s vital signs while under anaesthesia. This can include heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation and blood pressure.

A surgical procedure might be necessary to treat a problem your pet is experiencing, like:

Lump removal

Eye surgery

Abscess drainage

Spay or castration

Debridement or removal of damaged tissue

Exploration of the abdomen

Foreign body removal

During surgery, your pet will get:

Appropriate medication

Sterile procedure in a sterile theatre

Advanced monitoring

Heat mat to stay warm

Fluid warmer to warm drip fluid

Intravenous fluid drip

Triple pain relief

Pre-anaesthetic blood tests are highly recommended to make sure your pet is in good health and does not have any underlying health problems that could put your pet at risk during the procedure.

The Procedure

The pet needs to come to the Hilton Vet Hospital on the appointed morning being fasted for 12 hours. Admission time is between 8 am and 9 am. You will be asked to weigh your pet and to then tuck them into a hospital bed. They accept it much better if you are involved. You then stay with your pet while you complete the admission form. This will give your pet some more time to settle in before you leave. The surgery is performed under general gas anaesthesia.

A intravenous fluid drip is placed to keep the blood pressure stable and make sure your pet wakes up feeling fully hydrated. As we warm the drip fluid, your pet will be comfortable and warm during the surgical procedure. Your pet will be connected to an advanced surgical monitor that allows us to keep a close eye on temperature, heart rate, respiration and oxygen saturation. The surgery is done under total sterile conditions to prevent infections.

Your pet will receive triple pain relief to make sure all pain is under control. Pain relief includes an anti-inflammatory that lasts 24 hours, a strong pain killer that last 6 hours and a long acting local anaesthesia that blocks the pain at the surgical site. As soon as your pet is fully recovered from the anaesthesia and able to walk we will ring you and organise a time for you to pick up your pet.

Your pet might go home with an Elizabethan collar, depending on the surgery, to prevent her from licking the wound. We also provide pain relief for the next three days. After 2 weeks, the stitches are removed.
